Is it Really All About Abs?

What is up with obsession with six-pack abs? It seems every other workout program being sold is about abs. Now, I’ve got nothing against a flat stomach. I want to keep mine, and I like them on women. But why is abdominal definition such an important thing to everyone? In the gym, some people slack off on hard leg work. Others seem to love heavy squats and leg presses. Most of the guys spend too much time on the bench press, and the women seem to have a fixation with working their triceps. But almost all of them hit the ab exercises every visit. Sure, strong abs are important for a healthy back and contribute to overall core strength - but I don’t think too many of these people are worried about their functional fitness. They just want to show off dem abs!
