My ski-field accident — fortunately I didn’t need spine surgery afterwards
I remember an accident I had on a small ski field six or seven years ago.I’d been flying down a small, shallow slope on an inflated motor car tube with the kids. We’d done this several times and were having a lot of fun. Then I aimed to extend my slide by going right to the end of our small area, near the car park. The problem was, and I didn’t see this at the time I sat down on the tube and gently pushed off for the slide, that my run ended in a drop. About four feet of drop down onto the frozen roadway. This occurred to me, in a flash, as I came to the drop and realized that I was going over onto the road and would land on my bottom.I did.I lay there for minutes — that seemed like hours — gasping for air and unable to move. After what must have been five minutes recovering on the cold icy road I managed to stagger up and lurch to our car. I lay in the back seat the rest of the day, and my wife did the driving home.Took me days to recover. But I was just grateful I had not damaged my spine and that I did not need spine surgery
